HYDROCARBON RESINS

INTRODUCTION

Hydrocarbon Resins are petroleum-based products either aliphatic (C5), aromatic (C9), Dicyclopentadiene (DCPD), or mixtures of these. the feed streams to produce hydrocarbon resins are by-products of naphtha cracking and C9 resin oil.

C-5 Aliphatic Hydrocarbon Resins

Aliphatic Resins (C5) are generally polymers of monomers with five carbons and basic C5 aliphatic resins have light yellow to light brown color (Gardner between 1.5 – 6 ).

To polymerize the liquid C5 feedstock to a hard resin a Lewis acid catalyst and carefully selecting temperature and pressure is used to get the desired softening point and molecular weight.

Since C-5 Resins are Aliphatic based so they can find their greatest utility as tackifiers for predominantly aliphatic polymers such as styrene-isoprene-styrene block copolymers, styrene-ethylene butylene-styrene block copolymers, amorphous polyolefins, polyethylene, butyl rubber, EPDM ( Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer,)rubber, natural rubber and petroleum waxes  and also they are used in producing pressure sensitive adhesives tapes and labels, hot melt adhesives for nonwoven product assembly, modified wax compounds, hot melt road marking compounds, rubber compounding, and paint and coatings applications.

C( hydrocarbon resin
(C9) Aromatic Hydrocarbon Resin

These resins are produced from C9 resin oil  and generally polymers of nine-carbon aromatic monomers.C9 resins are normally in dark yellow to dark brown (Gardner 6-10) and are used mainly in EVA-based adhesives, contact adhesive for footwear, printing inks, sealants, paints, systems based on styrene butadiene rubber, styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymers, polychloroprene rubber, ethylene vinyl acetate copolymers with high levels of vinyl acetate (>28%), chlorinated paraffins. C9 liquid resins are especially useful in flooring adhesives.
