INTRODUCTION

Titanium Dioxide ( Tio2) is the naturally occurring oxide of titanium  and produced from titanium ore through  two  industrial processes – Sulfate and chloride , that  can produce two types of Tio2 – Anatase and Rutile .Titanium Dioxide is a bright white substance used primarily as a vivid colorant in many products, Its reflective index and brightness impart  opacity and whiteness to paints , coatings, inks plastics and paper. Titanium Dioxide also is used in cosmetics that serves as a white pigment, a sunscreen, and an opacifier . Rutile grade  has many significant uses  and about 75% of  total Tio2 consumption is from this grade .Rutile comes from the Latin word “ Rutilus “ which means red , because when  viewed by transmitted light , the rutile exhibits a deep red color. The name “anatase” is derived from the Greek word “ana,” which means “elongated” and refers to the mineral crystal’s shape. It is a type of polymorph which becomes rutile  when heated at about 915C. Anatase Tio2 is it is not advisable to use it outdoors because of its lower absorption rate than rutile.
